Afirmativas
En las oraciones afirmativas usamos «sujeto + verbo to be + verbo terminado en -ing + complemento». Este tipo de frases expresan acciones que están ocurriendo en este momento. Ejemplos:
- Sally is listening to music on the bus. / Sally está escuchando música en el bus.
- They are playing a game on their new iPad. / Están jugando un juego en su nuevo iPad.
- It is snowing in South America. / Está nevando en América del Sur.
- I am building my own house. / Estoy construyendo mi propia casa.
- You are dancing alone. / Estás bailando solo.
- We are wearing brand new clothes. / Estamos usando ropa nueva.
- You are being rude. / Ustedes están siendo groseros.
Negativas
En las oraciones negativas en presente progresivo usamos «not» después del «verbo to be». Recuerda que lo más común en inglés es usar las contracciones, como «isn’t» o «aren’t»:
- He isn’t swimming with his aunts. / Él no está nadando con sus tías.
- Sebastian and Pat are not pretending to be sick. / Sebastián y Pat no están fingiendo estar enfermos.
- My teacher isn’t selling his Ferrari. / Mi profesor no está vendiendo su Ferrari.
- You and your girlfriend are not taking drama lessons. / Tú y tu novia no están tomando clases de teatro.
- The robot isn’t cleaning my flat correctly. / El robot no está limpiando bien mi apartamento.
- My yoga instructor is not looking for a new job. / Mi instructora de yoga no está buscando un nuevo trabajo.
- I am not trying to offend you. / No estoy intentando ofenderte.
Interrogativas
En las preguntas, usamos este orden: primero la palabra «WH» (what, where, why, etc.) o el «verbo to be» si no hay palabra «WH»; luego el sujeto; después el verbo con -ing; al final el complemento; y, por último, el signo de interrogación, que en inglés va solo al final. Veamos:
- Is it raining out there? / ¿Está lloviendo afuera?
- Is your sister working at the new museum? / ¿Tu hermana está trabajando en el nuevo museo?
- Why are they pointing at you? / ¿Por qué te están señalando?
- What are you doing to learn English? / ¿Qué estás haciendo para aprender inglés?
- Are they complaining about the service at the restaurant? / ¿Se están quejando por el servicio en el restaurante?
- Is your dog chasing those cats? / ¿Tu perro está persiguiendo esos gatos?
- Who am I talking to? / ¿Con quién hablo?
