Sarah: Hi Sarah, how are you? Radio Greetings
Fred: Hi, I’m doing fine, thanks. How are you doing today?
Sarah: I’m doing fine.
Fred: Greetings are quite important in our daily life. So today we will learn about formal and informal greetings in English. Sarah, tell me please about the most common formal greetings you know.
Sarah: OK, well the most common ones, I would say, would be depending on time of day, when you say GOOD MORNING, GOOD AFTERNOON or GOOD EVENING. If you use Good Night, it’s usually when you are going to leave somewhere at the end of the day or if you’re gonna go to bed. So you’d usually say Good Night to somebody that you are leaving.
Fred: OK, so please now tell us, in what situations can we use those formal greetings?
Sarah: With those formal greetings I would say, you use it with people that you’ve just met, for example. So if you don’t know somebody and you’re introduced to another person, you would use a formal greeting or if you are at work, for example, and you are talking to your boss or somebody with authority, you would use a formal greeting.
Fred: Let’s talk about informal greetings. So which are the most common ones that you know?
Sarah: The most common ones that I know and I use are things like HEY, HOW IS IT GOING? Or HEY, WHAT’S UP? like the application.
Fred: Yeah, like the application. When can we use those informal greetings, in what situations?
Sarah: I would usually use those greetings if I’m meetings friends or if I’m introduced to friends of friends, so in a more, like kind of, social situation.
Fred: What happens if you use an informal greeting in a formal situation? Is that a huge problem?
Sarah: Not really a huge problem, but it is inappropriate. So if you are in a formal situation, you should use the appropriate greeting or the person might feel disrespected if you use an informal greeting with them. So always make sure that you’re using the appropriate greeting depending on your situation.
